Utah Democrats wasted no time going after Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman Jr., who threw his hat in the ring Tuesday morning.
The Democrats released a YouTube video Monday that was a parody of Huntsman’s own campaign video.
The original video shows him riding his motorbike through scenic Southern Utah. The text on screen then reads, “in 6 days … Did not become famous with his band ‘Wizard.’” Huntsman received some flack for the unconventional video, and the Democrats decided to take advantage.
In the Democrats’ version of the video, they had a similar scene set in Southern Utah but the on-screen text reads, “In 1 day … has reversed positions he took as governor, riding away from his record.”
In a news release, they claimed that “It’s clear that Jon Huntsman is running — running away from his record as Governor of Utah.”
Scott Nielsen, vice-chair of the BYU College Republicans, said the move was a confusing one by the Utah Democrats.
“I understand what they were saying, but I don’t understand what their motive is,” Nielsen said. “He has changed some of his views, I don’t contest that. I still don’t understand why they would make that ad. If you look at the Democratic National Committee, they’re really not focusing on attacking Huntsman at all. They’re focusing on Romney. He is more of a serious candidate at this point. I think the Utah Democrats are misguided in what they’re doing.”
In an email, Gary Ashcroft, president of BYU College Democrats, disagreed and said the ad was a good move.
“I think that this video is a very wise move on the part of Utah Democrats, as part of Huntsman’s appeal is his moderate record,” Ashcroft said. “If it can be illustrated that he is abandoning his record so quickly with an eye toward the primaries, I think many independents and conservative Democrats will be more reluctant to vote for him should he capture the Republican nomination for president.”
